Dr Kariappa grew up on the Georges River and completed his schooling at Trinity Grammar School prior to embarking on medical training at the University of Nottingham, which he completed in 2000.

Following his internship and residency at St George Hospital, Dr Kariappa undertook a further 6 years of General Surgical training, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2009.  He subsequently completed an additional 2 years of sub-specialty training in Colorectal Surgery under the supervision of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ).
These 2 years of post-Fellowship training allowed the acquisition and honing of skills specific to colorectal surgery; including advanced colonoscopic techniques, laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery and management of inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr Kariappa is a conjoint lecturer for the School of Medicine at the University of New South Wales.
